In a ship's power plant, the working fluid,helium gas is heated in a nuclear reactor and drives both the main propulsion turbine anda compressor turbine circulating the gas. Two annular heat exchangers are mountedconcentrically round the reactor. The gas enters the inner exchanger from the

compressor, passes through to the reactor, is heated therein and then is expanded in theturbines. On leaving the latter it again passes through the inner exchanger, on theopposite side, so as to heat the incoming gas. After leaving the inner exchanger the gasflows to the outer heat exchanger, which is liquid cooled, and is returned to thecompressor.
