Good evening, honorable judges, chairman, ladies and gentlemen, Our view is that we are against student pageants.

Nowadays student pageants have become a sort of popular TV programs, such as Beauty Show and Talent Show. So most of the people focus their eyes on them. But something bad still happened.

Today the purposes of student pageants are becoming more and more complicated. Meanwhile those youngsters who are members taking part in student pageants even don’t know what they come for. It is true that they do much but think little. Sometimes groups of young people just follow the steps of the others without taking anything into consideration. And the attitudes that those so-called experts and judges present to the contestants are worth our careful thought. What’s more, the first round of the student pageant contest should have been put on TV, regardless of its side effect, which amuses the audience a lot but does great harm to the rights of the contestants. There are a lot of problems worth our dwelling on.

So now I’d like to give some supporting details by using F.W.I.C. effects. F stands for feast. Student pageants are only a feast for the eyes. The judges just give scores to beautifully dressed contestants according to their physical criteria. Anyone with any self-respect should refuse to take part. In actual fact, what you see is just a well-prepared performance but not the bottom of somebody’s heart.

W stands for waste. Student pageants are a waste of money and time as well as vigor. As is known to all, every student pageant costs large amounts of money and also it takes months of time to make a good preparation. And most Chinese college students can not afford to spend either time or money.

I stands for invasion. Student pageants are a kind of invasion to Chinese culture. Every now and then, we can see some people who wear fancy clothes and behave strangely in student pageant programs. They are invading our traditional culture. If we keep this going on. We’ll of course lose our tradition and even worse we may be westernized.

C stands for commerce. Student pageants are a commerce design. Nowadays they have an obvious tendency to be designed for trade and commerce. How terrible! Participators should have become products shown on TV. And some TV stations have an efficient promotion in student pageants. They exploit plenty of advertisements to catch people’s eyes and to mislead us students to dream of being famous and rich overnight.

To draw a conclusion from all above, student pageants are a fascinating evil. Think it over on the whole, then you’ll find that it does more harm than good t

o us students and it has more bad effects than I can tell. So we are against student pageants. Thank you. 自由辩论词

Last Thursday I got a piece of good news that our college had given me the opportunity to take part in the dancing competition of Jinlin Province. Although I felt delighted and excited, I declined it. Why? Why did I decline it? Because I realized the results. What I will benefit from it is not in proportion to what I will lose. As a student, study must come first. You might say that student pageants are a stage for students to realize their dreams. But I want to tell you that the most efficient way to gain a bright future is to study hard but not to take part in student pageants. So I do not regret giving up that opportunity.

Actually student pageants do more harm to society than to individuals. Four years earlier in ChangChun, a student pageant called Super Boy came up, and I still remember the champion in ChangChun Contest Area was a team called A-one. As a TV-watching lover, I watched every show performed by A-one. Then I was shocked when I heard the news that this team was put in the first place because in my mind, obviously the other contestants were far more versatile compared with A-one. Two months later, I got the truth that this team had bribed all the judges with numerous money. That’s why they could be the first. Another point is that it has side effects on our society. I mean corruption will get in the way of social progress. That will be the worst thing in this civilized society. Do you agree? I’m sure you agree.

I have just talked about the bad effects that student pageants have on our society. Corruption is only one point. Another point is that student pageants may result in a great loss in professional aspects, such as scientific research, medical treatment and so on. Now please allow me to take China’s spaceflight industry as an example. Let us imagine if our spaceflight hero YangLiwei had had the potential to sing and dance when he was a college student. And he had chozen to sing and dance as his career instead of to be a spaceman. Yes, he might also be successful. But our country would lose an excellent spaceman and you might haven’t seen manned spacecraft ShenZhou 5 rocket into the sky. So I believe everyone here will agree that a spaceman does more significant contributions to our country than a singer or dancer does.

You might say that you can benefit a lot from student pageants. But you’ll know the fact that every student pageant costs a lot of money if you have ever taken part. Once I read a piece of news in China Daily that a university student borrowed money from here and there in order to take part in a TV show called Super Girl. But unfortunately she failed to show and express herself on the stage. And at the same time she was unable to pay back the money she borrowed from her friends, classmates and relatives. So at last she had to quit school. How pathetic! Maybe you think this poor guy deserves it. But how many of you would like to take part in student pageants? Let us assume, you have plenty of money, will you take part in student pageants? Will you?

Yeah, you may take part when you’re rich, but I still have another reason to support my opinion.

Student pageants are also a waste of time and vigor. Most of the student pageants are not on during the summer and winter vacation. So more or less they have a bad impact on your study if you take part in student pageants during your college years. As a matter of fact, you just spend a little time showing yourself on TV, but it takes quite a lot of time and vigor for you to make a good preparation. Well, at this point, will you make up your mind to get bad marks or even fail in the exams just for a student pageant? Certainly you won’t.

To make a brief conclusion, student pageants are a waste of money, time and vigor. So we’re against student pageants.

I’m afraid I don’t agree. Yes, there is no denying the fact that the existence of student pageants has its inevitability. But many unknown stories have killed our confidence in the justice of student pageants. For instance, a junior high school student, whose family is not that rich, paid quite a lot of money for transportation and board and lodging in order to take part in Super Girl. And it was exciting that she ranked the 10 in her contest area, whereas she was not known to the public. Was it because she didn’t pay enough money or because her performance was inferior to someone else’s? Unquestionably the former. Are you of the same opinion as I?
