Cars are doing more harm than good.doc

There is no consensus of opinions among people about whether cars are doing more harm than good or not. Some people are of the view that cars are doing more good to our society, while others take an opposite side, firmly believing that cars are doing more harm than good. As far as I am concerned, the latter notion is preferable in many senses. The reasons are obvious.

For one thing, cars are evils resulting from modernization, for they make people suffer rather than enjoy life. Cars often produce air pollution and fill the cities with unbearable noise. It may cause lots of illness because of the breathing polluted air, such as headaches, tiredness, and stomach upsets and so on. As more and more cars are produced and used, the emission from their exhaust pipes contains an ever larger volume of poisonous gas. Some of the contents of this gas, such as the carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, not only cause harm to the health of people but pollute the atmosphere. The raise of polluted air is thought to be an important factor which makes the earth become much warmer.

For another, cars are the cause of traffic accidents. All over the world thousands upon thousands of people are killed or injured every year. However, traffic accidents caused by cars not only bring death and injury, but also make people suffer mentally and psychologically. Especially for those people who lose relatives in the car accidents.

Last but not the least, it is also becoming increasingly difficult to deal with the problem of traffic in towns. True, using the cars is very convenient. But in fact, any advantage gained in comfort is often cancelled out in city by the frustration caused by traffic jams, endless queues of cars crawling bumper to bumper through all the main streets. Even worse, the roads are so often jammed with cars that ambulances & fire engines find it difficult to fulfill their duties.

Taking all these factors into consideration, we naturally come to the conclusion that cars are doing more harm than good.
