University of Maryland student Ben Simon and his friends couldn’t stand to see good food thrown out on their campus. “We basically noticed that some of the extra food from the dining hall was going to waste at the end of the day. And we met with the dining services and asked them whether it would be okay if instead of throwing out the food we could donate it. And they were on board.” he said.
So 18 months ago, the students began what they call the Food Recovery Network. Each night, volunteers would show up at a campus dining hall to pick up leftovers and deliver them to area shelters and food banks. So far, they have donated more than 23,000 kilos of food that would otherwise have been thrown out.
Nationwide, $165 billion worth of food is wasted each year, according to the National Resources Defense Council. Spokesman Bob Keefe says that is about 40% of the country’s entire food production. “If we can reduce our waste in this country by 15%, we can feed 25 million hungry Americans. That is a huge benefit. That is what programs like this Food Recovery Network are doing. ” he said.
Christian Life Center is one of the beneficiaries of the students’ efforts. Ben Slye, the senior pastor(牧师), said, “It has been just amazing to see these students take their own time, their own vehicles and own gas money and be able to make an effort like this. Each week we are able with this food probably to feed over hundred people.”
The University of Maryland’s Food Recovery Network now has 200 volunteers and the program has expanded to 18 schools across the country. “I want to grow 18 chapters to a thousand chapters within five years. And once we get to the Food Recovery Nation being at every college campus in America, we want to expand to restaurants and farms.” Said Simon.
The volunteers are committed to making that happen.

It’s interesting to see how people make use of the time they spend on public transport in Indian cities like Delhi and Mumbai.
- 4 -
In crowded buses and trains people manage to take a short nap and some even reach the snoring(打鼾)stage. Or they spread out a newspaper over multiple knees and arms to read about the latest sport results or political crisis.
Then there are the experienced travelers who have been playing cards with the same group over the last decade or so. They even have their specific seats so well-worn that you can make out the shape of their backsides.
There is no doubt about it. Travelling by public transport is being in the thick of the seasons of life — a sweaty life in summer where people, blissfully unaware of the rivers of sweat running down their brows and inside their clothes. At the first smell of a perfumed man or woman boarding the stuffy bus or train, most people feel they are reborn.
During the rains you can’t avoid getting wet or muddied. The windows, almost always, are not a perfect fit and if you’re not drenched by a sudden, heavy rain shower then you are bound to catch a jet spray of muddy water caused by a fellow motorist driving fast through a puddle(水坑).
Rains are a perfect time for people to switch their old umbrellas for new ones. Since there are so many that look alike, it’s impossible to tell whose is whose.
Winter is the time when it feels good — or at least warm — to be part of a crowd. It is amazing how much the collective breaths of a 100 or so people can raise the freezing temperature inside. Looking at the masses dressed in their bright red pullovers or green coats, it’s fun to imagine what faces lie beneath their dark woolen hats.
The cold winter passes, making way for spring. It is impossible not to see very little flower by the wayside blooming proudly. And the warm sun manages to transmit some of their pleasantness to the inside of a bus or train.
Now, wouldn’t it be perfect if we had a public transport worth the name in all our cities?
46. On Indian public transport, you can always expect to see people _______. A. arguing and playing games
B. enjoying the view and playing cards C. sleeping and reading newspapers
D. carrying umbrellas and whispering politely
47. According to the author, what will make passengers feel refreshed during summer traveling? A. The cool evening breeze. B. The rain pouring over their clothes. C. The joy of a game of cards. D. The sweet fragrance of a new passenger. 48. If you see people in colorful clothing and breathing heavily, you are probably traveling during the _______.
A. summer B. winter C. rainy seasons D. spring 49. We can infer from the passage that _______.
A. Indian people don’t mind switching umbrellas with others B. almost everyone in India wears perfume when they go out C. Indian transport is the most crowded in the world D. the buses and trains are old and in poor conditions 50. What is the tune of language used in this passage?
A. Humorous. B. Critical. C. Frightening. D. Concerned.

Mars Was Not Always Bitterly Cold
Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have reported evidence that Mars was warmer and wetter long ago than it is today. The Caltech scientists say they have directly established the temperature of Mars four billion years ago. At least, they established the surface temperature on part of the planet at that time. The researchers say it is the first such evidence to be discovered and presented.
The Caltech scientists say carbonate minerals formed on Mars at about 18 degrees Celsius. They reached the finding after studying a meteorite that had its beginnings near the Martian

surface.
Today, the average temperature on Mars is 63 degrees below zero Celsius.
The finding was reported on the website of the National Academy of Sciences. Caltech Assistant Professor Woody Fischer helped to prepare the report. He says 18 degrees Celsius is not especially cold or not. He says this makes the finding extremely interesting. Knowing the temperature can give scientists an idea of the climate on Mars long ago. It can also help them decide whether the planet had liquid water. Spacecraft orbiting Mars have shown what appear to be rivers, lakebeds and mineral deposits. These pictures suggest that, at one time, water did flow there. Mars Rover vehicles and other spacecraft have confirmed the information.
Caltech Geology Professor John Eiler was another writer of the report. He says knowing the temperature of Mars from long ago provides valuable information. It shows that early in the planet’s history, at least part of Mars could support a climate like that of Earth.
The meteorite the scientists examined is one of the oldest known rocks in the world. It is called the Allan Hills meteorite. Its name came from the place in Antarctica where it was found in 1984. The meteorite is believed to have blown loose from the Mars’ surface when another space rock struck its “home”.
51. The underlined word “established” in Paragraph 1 probably means _______.
A. set up or founded B. started having a relationship with others C. discovered or proved D. made people accept an idea 52. How did the scientists reach the finding? A. By using spacecraft orbiting Mars. B. By studying Allan Hills meteorite. C. By studying minerals gathered on Mars.
D. By studying a meteorite on the Martian surface.
53. According to the 4th paragraph, what have spacecraft orbiting Mars done? A. Measuring the temperature of Mars. B. Taking photos of the surface of Mars.
C. Confirming that there is water flowing on Mars.
D. Finding where human beings will probably land on Mars. . How did Allan Hills meteorite get its name? A. From its original place on Mars.
B. From the name of the aircraft that discovered it. C. From the name of the scientist who found it. D. From where it was found on the earth.
55. Where can we most probably read this passage?
A. In a science journal. B. In an environment report.
C. In a tourist handbook. D. In a biography of scientists.

But things changed after he left home and attended the boarding school. His grades started dropping. He hated being in a group. He was lonely all the time. And there were especially dark times when he felt like killing himself. All of this was because he felt worthless and that no one loved him. His parents started worrying about him. But even they did not know what was wrong.
So his dad decided to visit the school and talk with him. They sat on the bank of the lake near the school. The father started asking him casual questions about his classes, teachers and sports. Then he asked, “Do you know, son, why I am here today?” They boy answered back, “to check my grades?” “No, no!” his dad replied, “I am here to tell you that you are the most important person for me.
