Passage One

We don’t have beds in the spacecraft, but we do have sleeping bags.During the day, when We are working,we leave the bags tied to the wall, out of the way.At bedtime we untie them and take them wherever we’ve chosen to sleep.

On most spacecraft flights everyone sleeps at the same time.No one has to stay awake to watch over the spacecraft;the craft’s computers call us on the radio.

On the spacecraft, sleep-time doesn’t mean nighttime. During each ninety-minutes orbit (轨道) the sun“rises” and shines through our windows for about fifty minutes, then it \"sets\" as the spacecraft takes us around the dark side of the Earth. To keep the sun out of our eyes, we wear black sleep masks.

It is surprisingly easy to get comfortable and fall asleep in space. Every

astronaut (宇航员) sleeps differently: some sleep upside down, some sideways, and

some right side up. When it’s time to sleep, I take my bag, my sleep mask and my tape player with earphones and float (漂浮) up, to the flight deck (驾驶舱),Then I get into the bag, and float in a sitting position just above a seat, right next to a window. Before I pull the mask down over my eyes, I relax for a while, listening to music and watching the Earth go by under me.

51.When the astronauts are working, sleeping bags are fastened____________. A. on the wall B. to their seats C. onto the flight deck D. anywhere they like 52.Why can all the astronauts sleep at the same time? A. They have to follow the same timetable.

B. The radio will take care of the aircraft for them.

C. There are enough sleeping bags in the spacecraft. D. There is no need for them to watch over the spacecraft. 53.To relax himself before sleep, the writer often____________. A. makes a bed B. gets into his bag C. listens to music D. wears a sleep mask .How long does it take the spacecraft to go round the Earth? A. Forty minutes. B. Fifty minutes. C. Ninety minutes D. Twenty-four hours. 55.The best title for this passage is____________.

A. Traveling in Space B. Sleeping in the Spacecraft C. Equipment Used by Astronauts D. The Earth Seen from Outer Space

Passage Two

When a rare disease ALD threatened to kill the four-year-old boy Lorenzo, his parents refused to give up hope.Doctors explained that there was no cure for ALD, and that he would probably die within three years. But Lorenzo's parents set out to prove the doctors wrong.

The parents devoted themselves to keeping their son alive and searching for a cure. But doctors and the families of other ALD patients often refused to take them seriously. They thought the efforts to find a cure were a waste of time, and dru companies weren't interested in supporting research into such a rare disease.

However, the parents still refused to give up and spent every available hour in medical libraries and talking to anyone who would help. Through trial and error(反复试验), they finally created a cure from ingredients( 调料) commonly found in the kitchen. The cure, named \"Lorenzo's Oil\saved the boy's life. Despite the good results, scientists and doctors remained unconvinced. They said there was no real evidence that the oil worked and that the treatment was just a theory. Passage Three.

Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many

tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget

how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the well-being (幸福) of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities needed by tourists attractions. For example, a major international-class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers(下水道) to handle waste, and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

C. much pressure on traffic D. crowdedness of places of interest .Not enough tourism can lead to _______.

A. a decrease in tourist attractions B. a decrease in business profits C. an increase in the cost of support facilities D. an increase in the beauty of that country

65.The word “handle” in the last paragraph most probably means _________.

A. deal with B. pick up C. get in D. take down

Do you find it very difficult and painful to get up in the morning .This might be called laziness, but Dr.Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”.That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so,but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up,John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening.Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family

has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can lear to make your life fit it better.Habit can help.Dr.Kleitman believes.Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway.Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to.If your energy is low in the morning

But you have an important thing to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a s1ow start which saves your energy.Get up with a leisurely yawn(呵欠)and stretch.Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor.Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before.Whenever possible,do routine work in the afternoon and save more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.

71.If a person finds getting up early aproblem, most probably .

A.he is a very weak and lazy person B.he is not sure when his energy is low C.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evering
