DESCRIPTION

ThePBL3717AisamonolithicICwhichcontrolsanddrivesonephaseofabipolarsteppermotorwithchoppercontrolofthephasecurrent.Currentlevelsmaybeselectedinthreestepsbymeansoftwologicinputswhichselectoneofthreecurrentcompara-tors.Whenbothoftheseinputsarehighthedeviceisdisabled.Aseparatelogicinputcontrolsthedirec-tionofcurrentflow.

Amonostable,programmedbyanexternalRCnet-work,setsthecurrentdecaytime.

ThepowersectionisafullH-bridgedriverwithfourinternalclampdiodesforcurrentrecirculation.Anexternalconnectiontotheloweremittersisavailablefortheinsertionofasensingresistor.TwoPBL3717Asandfewexternalcomponentsformacompletesteppermotordrivesubsystem.

Theraccomendedoperatingambienttemperaturerangesisfrom0to70°C.

GroundConnection.Withpins5,12and13alsoconductsheatfromdietoprintedcircuitcopper.Seepin4.

SupplyVoltageInputforLogicCircuitry

Thispinandpin9(INPUT0)arelogicinputswhichselecttheoutputsofthethreecomparatorstosetthecurrentlevel.Currentalsodependsonthesensingresistorandreferencevoltage.Seetruthtable.

ThisTTL-compatiblelogicinputsetsthedirectionofcurrentflowthroughtheload.AhighlevelcausescurrenttoflowfromOUTPUTA(source)toOUTPUTB(sink).Aschmitttriggeronthisinputprovidesgoodnoiseimmunityandadelaycircuitpreventsoutputstageshortcircuitsduringswitching.SeeINPUT1(pin7).

Inputconnectedtothethreecomparators.ThevoltageacrossthesenseresistorisfeedbacktothisinputthroughthelowpassfilterRCCC.Thelowerpower

transistoraredisabledwhenthesensevoltageexceedsthereferencevoltageoftheselectedcomparator.WhenthisoccursthecurrentdecaysforatimesetbyRTCT,toff=0.69RTCT.

Avoltageappliedtothispinsetsthereferencevoltageofthethreecomparators,thisdeterminingtheoutputcurrent(alsothusdependingonRsandthetwoinputsINPUT0andINPUT1).Seepin4.Seepin4.

Figure3showsatypicalapplicationinwhichtwoPBL3717Acontrolatwophasebipolarsteppermo-tor.

Programming

ThelogicinputsI0andI1setatthreedifferentlevelstheamplitudeofthecurrentflowinginthemotorwindingaccordingtothetruthtableofpage2.Ahighlevelonthe”PHASE”logicinputsetsthedirectionofthatcurrentfromoutputAtooutputB;alowlevelfromoutputBtooutputA.

Itisrecommendedthatunusedinputsaretiedtopin6(Vss)orpin4(GND)asappropriatetoavoidnoiseproblem.

Thecurrentlevelscanbevariedcontinuouslybychangingtheref.voltageonpin11.

ControloftheMotor

Thesteppermotorcanrotateineitherdirectionsac-cordingtothesequenceoftheinputsignals.Itispossibletoobtainafullstep,ahalfstepandaquar-terstepoperation.

FullStepOperation

Boththewindingsofthesteppermotorareener-gizedallthetimewiththesamecurrentIMA=IMB.I0andI1remainfixedatwhatevertorquevalueisre-quired.

CallingAtheconditionwithwindingAenergizedinonedirectionandAintheotherdirection,these-quenceforfullsteprotationis:

AB→AB→AB→ABetc.

Fortherotationintheotherdirectionthesequencemustbereserved.

Inthefullstepoperationthetorqueisconstanteachstep.

HalfStepOperation

Powerisappliedalternatelytoonewindingthenbothaccordingtothesequence:

AB→B→AB→A→AB→B→AB→Aetc.Likefullstepthiscanbedoneatanycurrentlevel;thetorqueisnotconstantbutitislowerwhenonlyonewindingisenergized.

AcoilisturnedoffbysettingI0andI1bothhigh.
