The Old Cat

An old woman had a cat. The cat was very old; she could not

run quickly, and she could not bite[bait], because she was so old. One day the old cat saw a mouse;she jumped and caught[kɔ:t] the mouse. But she could not bite it; so the mouse got out of her mouth and ran away, because the cat could not bite it.

Then the old woman became very angry because the cat had

not killed the mouse. She began to hit the cat. The cat said, \"Do not hit your old servant['sə:vənt]. I have worked for you for many years, and I would work for you still, but I am too old. Do not be unkind[ʌn'kaind] to the old, but remember what good work the old did when they were young.\" 【译文】 老猫

A man was going to the house of some rich person. As he went along the road, he saw a box of good apples at the side of the road. He said, \"I do not want to eat those apples; for the rich man will give me much food; he will give me very nice food to eat.\" Then he took the apples and threw them away into the dust.

He went on and came to a river. The river had become very big; so he could not go over it. He waited for some time; then he said, \"I cannot go to the rich man's house today, for I cannot get over the river.\"

He began to go home. He had eaten no food that day. He began to want food. He came to the apples, and he was glad to take them out of the dust and eat them.

Do not throw good things away; you may be glad to have them at some other time.

Once there were two mice. They were friends. One mouse lived in the country; the other mouse lived in the city. After many years the Country mouse saw the City mouse; he said, \"Do come and see me at my house in the country.\" So the City mouse went. The City mouse said, \"This food is not good, and your house is not good. Why do you live in a hole[həul]in the field['fi:ld]? You should come and live in the city. You would live in a nice house made of stone[stəun]. You would have nice food to eat. You must come and see me at my house in the city.\"

The Country mouse went to the house of the City mouse. It was a very good house. Nice food was set[set]ready for them to eat. But just as they began to eat they heard a great noise. The City mouse cried, \" Run! Run! The cat is coming!\" They ran away quickly and hid.

After some time they came out. When they came out, the Country mouse said, \"I do not like living in the city. I like living in my hole in the field. For it is nicer to be poor and happy, than to be rich and afraid.\"

One day a visitor from the city came to a small rural area to drive around the country roads, see how the farms looked, and perhaps to see how farmers earned their living. The city man saw a farmer in his yard, holding a pig up in his hands, and lifting it so that the pig

could eat apples from an apple tree. The city man said to the farmer,\" I see that your pig likes apples, but isn\"t that quite a waste of time?\" The farmer replied,\" What\"s time to a pig?\"

A Useful Lesson

In England nobody under the age of eighteen is allowed to drink in a public bar.

Mr. Thompson used to go to a bar near his house quite often, but he never took his son,Tom,because he was too young. Then when Tom had his eighteenth birthday, Mr.Thompson took him to his usual bar for the first time. They drank for half an hour, and then Mr.Thompson said to his son,“Now, Tom,I want to teach you a useful lesson. You must always be careful not to drink too much. And how do you know when you've had enough? Well, I'll tell you.Do you see those two lights at the end of the bar? When they seem to have become four, you've had enough and should go home.”

“But, Dad,” said Tom,“I can only see one light at the end of the bar.”

An Awkward Situation

One of the guests turned to a man by his side and criticized the woman who was singing.

\"What a terrible vioce! Do you know she is?\" \"Yes,\" was the answer,\"she is my wife.\"

\"Oh,l beg your pardon. Of course her vioce isn't bad. I wonder who wrote the awful song.\" \"l did,\" was the answer.

One of India's top engineering schools has restricted Internet access in its hostels, saying addiction to surfing, gaming and blogging was affecting students' performance, making them reclusive and even suicidal.

Authorities at the elite Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai said students had stopped socializing and many were late for morning classes or slept through them.

\"Now, a student doesn't even know who lives two doors away from him because he is so busy on the Internet,\" said Prakash Gopalan, dean of student affairs.

\"The old hostel culture of camaraderie and socializing among students is gone. This is not healthy in our opinion.\"

IIT-Mumbai, with about 5,000 students, is one of seven IITs across India which are considered to be among the finest

engineering schools in the world. They are also a talent pool for global technology giants.

But their exacting curriculum, tough competition and reclusive campus lifestyle have taken a toll on students.

Depressive and dysfunctional lifestyles are known to be common among IIT students, and at least nine have committed suicide in the past five years.

Students have unlimited free Internet access in their hostel rooms to help them in their studies, but many also use it to surf, chat, download movies and music, blog and for gaming.

Starting Monday, Internet access will be barred between 11 p.m. and 12.30 p.m. at IIT-Mumbai's 13 hostels to encourage students to sleep early and to try and force them out of their \"shells,\" Gopalan said.

\"There has been a decline in academic performance and also participation in sporting, cultural and social activities has gone down,\" he said.

But the move has not gone down well with students who say they hate their lives being regulated.

\"Now they will say we need to listen to a lullaby to go to sleep,\" said Rajiv, an electronics student.

One day, a teacher took his pupils to a chicken farm to pay a visit. When they came near the incubator, chick just got out of its egg shell.

\"It's wonderful to see a little thing come out from the egg shell, isn't it?\" the teacher said.

\"Yes, sir.\" said one of the boys, \" but it would be more wonderful if we knew how a chick gets in to its eggs hell before hand.\" “是的,老师.”

Isn't it funny how two people will often think of the same thing at the same time, and neither one know that the other is thinking of it? That is just what happened the day that Buster Bear first thought of going berrying. While he was walking around in the Green Forest, talking to himself about how hungry he was for some berries and how sure he was that there must be some up in the Old Pasture, some one else was thinking about berries and about the Old Pasture too.

\"Will you make me a berry pie if I will get the berries to-morrow?\" asked Farmer Brown's boy of his mother.

Of course Mrs. Brown promised that she would, and so that night Farmer Brown's boy went to bed very early that he might get up early in the morning, and all night long he dreamed of berries and berry pies. He was awake even before jolly, round, red Mr. Sun thought it was time to get up, and he was all ready to start for the Old Pasture when the first Jolly Little Sunbeams came dancing across the Green Meadows. He carried a big tin pail, and in the

bottom of it, wrapped up in a piece of paper, was a lunch, for he meant to stay until he filled that pail, if it took all day.

Everything is Ready Except the East Wind

China has been divided into three kingdoms historically: Wei in the north, Shu in the southwest and Wu in the southeast.

Once Cao Cao from Wei led a 200,000 strong army down to the south to wipe out the kingdoms of Wu and Shu. Therefore, Wu and Shu united to defend his attack. Cao ordered his men to link up the boats by iron chains to form a bridge for the Cao's passing from the north bank of Yangtze River to the south bank. The General Commander of the allied army was Zhou Yu. He analyzed the situation carefully. Then he got a good idea. He decided to attack the enemy with fire. So he began to prepare for the coming battle. Suddenly he thought of the direction of wind. He needed the east wind to blow strongly in order to accomplish his scheme. However, the wind did not come for days. Thus Zhou Yu was worried about it. At that time, he got a note from Zhuge Liang, the military adviser of the State of Shu, which reads: \"To fight Cao Cao Fire will help you win Everything is ready Except the east wind\"

Quickly he turned to Zhuge Liang for help. Zhuge told him not

to worry and there would be an east wind in a couple of days. Two days later, the east wind helped Zhou accomplish his scheme. At last, the allied army won the war.

(二)Give the wrong-doer a way out

Beginning with Yu the GREat, the Xia Dynasty had lasted about four hundred years before Jie became the supreme ruler. And that was in the 18th century BC. Jie was extremely tyrannical and dissolute. This aroused GREat resentment among the people. Tang, the Chief of the tribe Shang took advantage of this situation to overthrow the Xia Dynasty and established the Shang

Dynasty in the early 17th century BC. Among the preparations for the overthrow had been the winning over of popular support. One day, Tang was having a walk in the open country. He saw a man catching birds with a big net spread in a box-like and mumbling: \"Come on, birds! Come into my net. All of you, whether you are flying high or low, east or west. Come into my net!\"

Tang walked over and said to the man, \"This method is ruthless! You'll spare no birds this way!\" With these words, he cut the net down on three sides. Then he murmured in a light voice as if praying: \"Oh, birds! Fly to the left or right as you like. And if you're really tired of your life, come into this net!\"

When chiefs of other tribes heard about this, they were all moved. They said, \"Tang is a good king indeed. He is so kind even to birds and beasts. He must be more merciful to human beings.\" And very soon, about forty tribes pledged allegiance to Tang. From that story came the idiom \"Open the net on three sides\". Later, people changed it into \"Give the wrong-doer a way out.\", indicating to be lenient to the wrong-doers.

A woman was waiting at an airport one night, with several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shops, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop. She was

engrossed in her book but happened to see that the man sitting beside her, as bold as could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag in between, which she tried to ignore to avoid a scene. So she munched the cookies and watched the clock, as the gutsy cookie thief diminished her stock.

She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, thinking,\"If I wasn't so nice, I would blacken his eye.\" With each cookie she took, he took one too. When only one was left, she wondered what he would do. With a smile on his face, and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her half, as he ate the other.

She snatched it from him and thought...oooh, brother. This guy has some nerve and he's also rude. Why he didn't even show any gratitude! She had never known when she had been so galled and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed to the gate, refusing to look back at the ingrate thief.

She boarded the plane, and sank in her seat. Then she sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise. There was her bag of cookies, in front of her eyes. If mine are here, she moaned in despair, the others were his, and he tried to share. Too late to apologize, she realized with grief, that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief.

How many times in our lives have we absolutely known that something was a certain way, only to discover later that what we believed to be true...was not?

It is only when we silence the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us.

When you find something funny search it for hidden truth.
