Papa’s jaw dropped when Mama told him that Sister had cheated on her final exams—not to succeed but to fail. “It’s unbelievable!” he said. “Sister has always been so proud of her good grades!”

“Yes, she has,” said Mama. “But it’s not unbelievable. It just shows how badly she wanted off the swimming team.”

“Wanted off the swimming team?” said Papa. “She never said anything about that to me.” “Of course she didn’t,” said Mama. “She was afraid you’d blow your top. You already had her getting a swimming scholarship to college and winning gold medals at the Olympics. Can you imagine how much pressure she must have felt? For her, being on the team couldn’t have been much fun.”

“Oh, my gosh!” Papa said, clapping a hand to his forehead. “I’ve been so stupid! I just thought she’d want to be a champion swimmer because she’s so good at it.”

“It’s like anything else, dear,” said Mama. “No matter how good at it you are, if it stops being fun, you won’t want to do it anymore.” Papa put his head in his hands.

“She must be really mad at me,” he mumbled. “Maybe I should say sorry to her.” Sister’s footsteps could be heard on the stairs. She came into the kitchen and looked hopefully up at her parents.

“Honey,” said Mama with a smile, “your papa and I have decided that there’s no reason for you to be on the swimming team if you don’t want to.”

Sister’s face lit up like a Christmas tree. “Yippee!” she cried.

“And,” added Papa, “there’s no need for any more drills. I’m sure you’ll bring your grades back up all by yourself.”

Sister ran to Papa and jumped into his arms. She gave him a big hug. “I’m going to go play cards with Lizzy!” she said. “See you later!”

From the kitchen window, Mama and Papa watched their daughter run down the sunny road toward Lizzy’s house.

“It’s good to see her happy again,” said Mama.

“It sure is,” Papa agreed. “As for the swimming team, there’s always next year.” “If?” Mama prompted him.

“Oh, right,” said Papa. “If she wants to.”

Mama smiled. “At least you’re learning, dear,” she said. She kissed him. “Well, you know what they say,” Papa said. “Better late than never.” 41. Sister wanted off the swimming team because _____. Not long ago, people thought babies were not able to learn things until they were five or six months old. Yet doctors in the United States say babies begin learning on their first day of life.

Scientists note that babies are strongly influenced by their environment. They say a baby will smile if her mother does something the baby likes. A baby learns to get the best care possible by smiling to please her mother or other caregiver. This is how babies learn to connect and communicate with other human beings.

One study shows that babies can learn before they are born. The researchers placed a tape recorder on the stomach of a pregnant woman. Then, they played a recording of a short story. On the day the baby was born, the researchers attempted to find if he knew the sounds of the story repeated while in his mother. They did this by placing a device in the mouth of the newborn baby.

The baby would hear the story if he moved his mouth one way. If the baby moved his mouth the other way, he would hear a different story. The researchers say the baby clearly liked the story he heard before he was born. They say the baby would move his mouth so he could hear the story again and again.

Another study shows how mothers can strongly influence social development and language skills in their children.

Researchers studied the children from the age of one month to three years. The researchers attempted to measure the sensitivity of the mothers. The women were considered sensitive if they

supported their children’s activities and did not interfere unnecessarily. They tested the children for thinking and language development when they were three years old. Also, the researchers observed the women for signs of depression.

The children of depressed women did not do as well in tests as the children of women who did not suffer from depression. The children of depressed women did poorly in tests of language skills and understanding what they hear.

These children also were less cooperative and had more problems dealing with other people. The researchers noted that the sensitivity of the mothers was important to the intelligence development of their children. Children did better when their mothers were caring, even when they suffered from depression.

45. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT the factor that influences intelligence development in babies? A. The environment.

B. Mother’s sensitivity. D. Education before birth.

C. Their peers(同龄人)

46. What is the purpose of the experiment in which newborn babies heard the stories? A. To prove that babies can learn before they are born.

B. To prove that babies can learn on the first day they are born.

C. To show mothers can strongly influence intelligence development in their babies. D. To indicate early education has a deep effect on the babies’ language skills. 47. Which group of children did the worst in tests of language skills? A. The children of depressed mothers who cared little for their children. B. The children of women who did not suffer from depression. C. The children of depressed but caring mothers.

D. Children with high communication abilities. 48. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. Scientific findings about how babies develop before birth.

B. Scientific findings about how the environment has an effect on babies’ intelligence. C. A study shows babies are not able to learn things until they are rice or six months old.

D. Scientific findings about how intelligence develops in babies

Learning English is one of the few things I have been doing consistently over the past 16 years.Like most Chinese students, I started learning English because it was a compulsory (必修的) course in my middle school.More importantly, English was a central subject for the college entrance exam.

At that time, studying English was not a pleasant experience for me.There was no fun in the process of learning. The focus of our English education was getting a good mark in exams. And nobody told me that the real meaning of studying mother language was communication.

When I became a university student, I spent nearly half of my time on English. In fact , more than 90 percent of the job offer ads in Shanghai list “ proficiency (精通) as a main requirement.

How did I improve my English? People told me that TOEFL was very helpful and useful. As a result, I took a TOEFL training course and studied like mad. After six months’ preparation, I took part in the exam and got a high score.Later on, I had a chance to further my study in Britain.I soon discovered that all of my past English learning had been futile (没用的).When I first went shopping in a local supermarket, I really could not understand what the cashier was saying at all.

It was then that I realized I had totally missed the point.Instead of just passing exams, the main function of learning English or any other language is communication. What is more, language does not exist independent of culture.Hence, mechanical memorization helps very little in communication. That’s why I was still unable to freely express myself after learning English for many years.By no means am I talented in any foreign language.I am still learning English. Why?

First and foremost, my job requires me to use English everyday.Secondly, English helps me to have access to more information.Thirdly, as a bookworm, English gives me a chance to dive into the huge pool of inspiring English books.Last but not least, it is such a great experience

to write in another language.Indeed, English has become part of my life. 53.How did the writer find English when he was a student?

A.He was interested in it.

C.He thought it funny to study English.

B.He studied it because it was a compulsory course.

D.He often recited something when he studied English.

54.What is the purpose of studying English according to the writer’s idea?

A.To get high marks in exams

B.To prove that English is very important.

A.I am good at English.

B.I can speak English like natives.

C.I can master it but I can’t use it correctly. D.I continued to study English at university.

A.We need more mechanical memorization. B.We should read and recite more books.

C.We should study English as well as its culture and use it more.

D.We can study hard in classrooms and houses and get high marks in exams.

In our culture, the sources of what we call a sense of “mastery” — feeling important and worthwhile — and the sources of what we call a sense of “pleasure”— finding life enjoyable — are not always the same.Women often are told “You can’t have it all.” Sometimes what the speaker really is saying is: “You choose a career, so you can’t expect to have closer relationships or a happy family life.” or “You have a wonderful husband and children — what’s all this about wanting a career?” But women need to understand and develop both aspects of well-being, if they are to feel good about themselves.

Our study shows that, for women, well-being has two aspects. One is mastery, which includes self-respect, a sense of control over your life, and low levels of anxiety and depression.Mastery is closely related to the “doing” side of life, to work and activity.Pleasure is the other aspect, and it is made up of happiness, satisfaction and optimism. It is tied more closely to the “feeling” side of life. The two are independent of each other.A woman could be high in mastery and low in pleasure, and vice versa(反之亦然).For example, a woman who has a good job, but whose mother has just died, might be feeling very good about herself and in control of her work life, but the pleasure side could be damaged for a time.

The concepts of mastery and pleasure can help us identify the sources of well-being for women, and correct past mistakes. In the past, women were encouraged to look only at the feeling side of life as the source of all well-being.But we know that both mastery and pleasure are important. And mastery seems to be achieved largely through work.In our study, all the groups of employed women were valued significantly higher in mastery than women who were not employed.

A woman’s well-being is developed when she takes on multiple roles. At least by middle adulthood, the women who were involved in a combination of roles — marriages, motherhood, and

employment — were the highest in well-being, in spite of warnings about stress and strain. 57.It can be inferred from the first paragraph that ________.

A.for women, a sense of “mastery” is more important than a sense of “pleasure” B.for women, a sense of “pleasure” is more important than a sense of “mastery” C.women can’t have a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” at the same time D.a sense of “mastery” and a sense of “pleasure” are both necessary to women 58.The author’s attitude towards women having a career is________.

A.negative C.indifferent

B.positive D.realistic

59.One can conclude from the passage that if a woman takes on several social roles, ________.

A.it will be easier for her to overcome stress and strain B.she will be more successful in her career C.her chances of getting promoted will be greater D.her life will be richer and more meaningful

60.Which of the following can be considered as a source of “pleasure” for women?

A.Family life C.Regular employment ----- Well, 61

----- I really enjoy it. How about you? ----- I like it , too. 62

----- Yes, it is. And now I’m really hungry. Let’s get something to eat. ----- Ok. 63

----- Anything is good with me. Do you like Chinese food? ----- Yes, 64

----- Well, then, what about curry and rice?

----- I’m sorry, but I don’t like curry and rice very much. 65 ----- That’s sound good. Do you know any good pizza places around here? ----- Yes, there is one near here. A. The last part is really exciting. B. what do you think of the movie? C. I like Chinese food.

D. but I had Chinese food last night. E. What do you want to eat? F. Do you enjoy the film? G. What about pizza?

Good afternoon, everyone!

The topic of my speech today is “Cooperate with others”.

In this busy, modern world, if we want to complete our work effectively and efficiently, we must all learn to cooperate with others. If we lose our partner, then we will fail. Cooperation can save us a lot of time and energy. Additionally, we can learn much from our partners by

cooperating them.

When we cooperate with someone we like, we will feel very happy. And we can share our pleasure and sadness with him. But it can be difficult to be cooperative with someone we dislike. In such a situation, we may focus on our work, instead of our partner. Perhaps in working together with him for a long time, we’ll learn that he is a man to get along well with. Even if this doesn’t happen, it’s still worth a try.

How can we become a good partner? In my opinion, (we should try to listen to others’ opinions. If he makes mistakes, we also try to point them out. Thirdly, we mustn’t beat others to make them in unfavorable position)

Thank you for your listening!
