In 1620, the settlers, or Pilgrims, sailed to America on the Mayflower, seeking a place where they could have freedom of worship. After atempestuous two-month voyage they landed at in icy November, what is nowPlymouth, Massachusetts. During their first winter, over half of the settlersdied of starvation or diseases. The following spring the Iroquois Indianstaught them how to grow corn, a new food for the colonists. They showedthem other crops to grow in the unfamiliar soil and how to hunt and fish.

In the autumn of 1621, bountiful crops of corn, barley (大麦), beans andpumpkins were harvested. The colonists had much to be thankful for, so afeast was planned. They invited the local Indian chief and 90 Indians. TheIndians brought deer to roast with the turkeys and other wild game offered bythe colonists. The colonists had learned how to cook cranberries and differentkinds of corn and squash dishes from the Indians. To this first Thanksgiving, the Indians had even brought popcorn.

To many Americans, Labor Day marks the end of the summer, a day offfrom work and school, and one more chance to relax. But Labor Day is muchmore than just a day off. It represents a very important victory for laborerseverywhere. The holiday is a celebration of the social and economicachievements of American workers.

More than a century ago, workers were forced to deal with hardconditions. They were paid very little, and they often worked 10-to l2-hourdays. Men, women and even small children were forced to work even whenthey were sick. Tired of long hours and dangerous conditions, workers beganorganizing themselves into labor unions. On top of fighting for higher payand shorter workdays, they also fought for the rights of children. The workerswanted employers to place limits on the age of their workers so that smallchildren were not overworked or hurt in factories.

A New York City carpenter named Peter McGuire is believed forcoming up with the idea for Labor Day. A few months ago I took my daughter on a little fun weekend trip toMelbourne. We enjoyed a beautiful day at St Kilda beach and, after hours ofwalking around, we decided to sit down on a bench near Lunar Park to have alittle rest. We noticed a bag behind a bush but there was no one around so weassumed (猜想) it must have been stolen and dumped behind the bush. Therewere clothes, books, university documents and lots of other bits and pieces in

the bag. We also found a wallet with some cards and ID but no cash.

The bag belonged to an 18-year-old girl. She had put a tag (标签) on herbag with her address and phone number on it, so I called to let the ownerknow I’d found her bag and arranged some way to return it to her. The girl’smother took the call. She was so relieved that I’d phoned. She said herdaughter had gone to the beach that day when someone stole her bag. I toldthe lady we were leaving the next day to fly back to Queensland but I couldleave the bag at the hotel where we were staying for them to pick up the nexttime they were coming to Melbourne.

We returned to the hotel after carrying the bag around for the rest of theday. I thought about the poor girl and remembered times when people hadstolen things from me and how bad I felt. I had an idea. I put $100 and a notein her wallet that said;“I’m really sorry your money was stolen so I decidedto put a little cash back into your wallet to help restore your faith in humandecency (正派). All the best.”

A week later there were terrible bushfires in Victoria and Kinglake wasone of the towns which was almost completely destroyed. About 200 peoplelost their lives, hundreds were injured and many lost their homes. Iremembered the girl from Kinglake and wondered if she was still alive. Thenit occurred to me to call the hotel to find out if anyone had picked up the bag.I was told the bag had been picked up the previous day, which meant the girlhad survived! I was so happy to know that and even happier that I’d put thatmoney in her bag. It may have meant so much more to her since she mostlikely lost everything in that bushfire. It was probably the best way I’d everspent $100.
