Nice to hear from you. I’m glad to know from your e-mail that you’re interested in hutongs in Beijing. As for me, my favourite is Nanluoguxiang.

There, you can not only have a taste of Chinese architecture, but also enjoy local snacks. In addition, many famous Chinese writers used to live there, which makes the place a special one.

One Possible Version:

Dear Jim,

Learning that you’ll go back home and want to buy your parents a gift. Here is my suggestion.

I think Chinese stamps would be a nice choice. Stamps are considered works of art of mini-type, which hold commemorative value and can be a permanent collection. What’s more, stamps cover natural landscapes, major events and so on. Your parents can get to know about China from them. Besides, taking up little space, stamps are easy to carry. It is convenient to go to any post office or the Website of China Philatelic Corporation to choose your favorite stamps.

I’m sure your parents will like the gift. Hope my advice can be of some help.

Possible version 1:

Dear Chris,

How are you doing? I feel more than delighted to introduce a Chinese cultural heritage that I value most. It is

called Tangshi in Chinese—a form of traditional Chinese poems.

I am proud of this form of art because the poets vividly described the beauty of nature and the poems themselves reflected the social life of the prime time in Chinese history—Tang Dynasty. I am sure you will be amazed at the imagination and the creation of the poets. Even today, Chinese people still hold Poem-reading Contests annually to sing high praise for the value of the poems. Every time I recite them I feel every cell in my body wakes up. They are the pride of our culture.

So, Chris, do you feel like learning to read some Tangshi? Feel free to let me know if you need to know more about them.

I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Yours, Li Hua

Possible version 2:

Dear Chris,

Glad to receive your e-mail. Knowing you are interested in Chinese relics, I feel it an honor to introduce the Great Wall to you.

第 12 页

The Great Wall stands out from the other relics for its historical value and beauty. Built and rebuilt in different dynasties, it served as a great defense work, which could protect people from being attacked by other nationalities living in the northern part of China. Nowadays its grandness still attracts eyes of the world, as it climbs over mountains from the east to the west, extending itself for more than 21,000 kilometers.

Chinese poets like to compare the Great Wall to the backbone of Chinese, which shows its place in Chinese hearts. There is also a famous saying: He who does not reach the Great Wall is not a true man. The Great Wall is not a building, but a cultural symbol.

For further information of Chinese cultural relics, don’t hesitate to ask me.

This term, we participated in a photography exhibition in our school entitled “The Most Beautiful Autumn”.

On a Monday morning in early October, the moment I walked into our school, a notice about a photography exhibition caught my eyes. Each class should submit one autumn-themed photo taken by themselves. I told the good news to my classmates and we decided to enter the exhibition.

In the following two weeks, well equipped, we started taking photos. I began with our picturesque campus, while my classmates took photos of the breathtaking autumn scenery in the park. One day, during the lunch break, noticing our red classroom building against the clear blue sky, surrounded by trees with colorful leaves, I quickly pressed the shutter to freeze this lovely scene forever.

After all the photos were developed, my classmates and I

chose the best photo to submit. We discussed heatedly in our classroom, comparing the content and composition of the pictures that we had taken. Eventually, my photo was selected. You can imagine how excited I felt at that time.

To make our work more effective, in Monday’s class meeting, we discussed heatedly and at last agreed to do some specific things for the nearby community. Considering a bus stop as a window of city civilization, after school we volunteered to be guides leading the passengers patiently to wait in line to get on bus. To our delight, a lot of people got to know the importance of civilized behavior and the traffic went much smoother than usual. Respecting the elderly is a Chinese traditional virtue and a symbol of civilization as well. So on Wednesday afternoon, we went to accompany the old people in Pingguoyuan Geracomium and some students even made some specialty dishes for them. The bright smiles on the faces of the elderly are the biggest reward for our efforts.
