W: I called to ask you if you’d like to come to a lecture on Thursday evening at the college. It’s about the universe. The speaker’s supposed to be excellent.

M: Just a minute. I’ll see if I’m free. No, I’m not. I’ve already got something on that evening. Text 4:

M: Did you go to the football game yesterday afternoon?

W: Oh, yes. It should have started at 2:30, but it was delayed 50 minutes because of the rain. M: A really long time waiting! Text 5:

W: How exciting to think about it! I’ll have my first trip to London. Maybe I’ll have some trouble finding my way there.

M: Don’t worry about that. Just call me when you arrive. I’ll be glad to show you around.

Text 6:

W: When does the train leave? M: It leaves at 6:15 pm.

W: Hurry up, we must get there half an hour earlier, or we’ll be late. M: Don’t worry; we must pack up our things carefully. W: Have we forgotten anything?

M: We’d better look through them again.

W: Oh, I’m sorry I have left two boxes behind in the bedroom. M: Now I think we’re ready to go.

Text 7:

W: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?

M: Yes, please. I am leaving America soon. I wan to buy an American toy for my son as his

birthday present, but I don’t know which one is the best for him. W: How old is your son? M: Four years old.

W: This is a “Panda Trucker”. It is an electric toy. I think your son will enjoy playing with it. M: Show me how it works, please.

W: It’s very simple. Put two batteries into this box, then turn on the switch, and the panda will drive the truck.

M: What an interesting toy it is! I’ll take one. I’m sure my son will be delighted. Here’s the money. Thanks for your suggestion.

W: You’re welcome. I wish you a pleasant journey. Text 8:

W: Everyone seems to be on a diet. Have you noticed that?

M: At least everyone is talking about it. A neighbor of mine is on a banana diet. She eats a banana for breakfast, one for lunch and two for dinner.

W: That’s bad for the teeth and health. Has she lost any weight?

M: She doesn’t look any thinner. My sister eats eggs to lose weight. Only eggs for breakfast, for lunch, and for dinner.

W: That’s bad for the heart! Something in eggs is good for losing weight, but too many eggs are bad for the heart.

M: I’ve read that too. Then what about a steak diet? One of my cousins doesn’t eat anything but steak, even for breakfast.

W: That’s bad for the bank account.

M: Then what’s the best way to lose weight?

W: It is to eat less and exercise more. Look, I’m on my way to the tennis court. Text 9:

M: For thousands of years, people have enjoyed the taste of apples. Apples, which contain about 85 percent water, grow almost everywhere in the world except the hottest and the coldest areas. Among the leading countries in apple production are China, France and the United States. There are various kinds of apples. Apples are different in color, size and taste. The color of the skin may be red, green, or yellow. Apple trees may grow as tall as twelve meters. They do best in areas that have very cold winters. Although they give no fruit during the winter, this cold period is good for the tree. Text 10:

W: Puerto Rico is an island about a thousand miles off the coast of Florida. Puerto Rico has its own government, but it is part of the United States. Because more than three million people live there, the island is one of the most crowded places in the world. There are not enough factories in Puerto Rico to provide jobs for everyone. Many people in Puerto Rico are very poor. Since World War II, thousands of them have come to New York City. They have come to find work and to become a part of America. At the beginning, because they only speak Spanish and have little education as children, they still live a poor life. But now many of them in New York are working in business and government. Today they operate thousands of small businesses in New York. Over 5,000 of them hold jobs in the city government. Some are doctors and lawyers. As time goes by, more and more of them are finding a

better way of life.
