DESCRIPTION

Thisfamilyoffour-,eight-,orsixteen-,differentiallinereceivers(withoptionalintegratedtermination)im-plementstheelectricalcharacteristicsoflow-voltagedifferentialsignaling(LVDS).Thissignalingtechniquelowerstheoutputvoltagelevelsof5-Vdifferentialstandardlevels(suchasEIA/TIA-422B)toreducethepower,increasetheswitchingspeeds,andallowoperationwitha3-Vsupplyrail.Anyoftheeightorsixteendifferentialreceiversprovidesavalidlogicaloutputstatewitha±100-mVdifferentialinputvoltagewithintheinputcommon-modevoltagerange.Theinputcommon-modevoltagerangeallows1VofgroundpotentialdifferencebetweentwoLVDSnodes.Additionally,thehigh-speedswitchingofLVDSsignalsalmostalwaysrequirestheuseofalineimpedancematchingresistoratthereceivingendofthecableortransmissionmedia.TheLVDTproductseliminatethisexternalresistorbyintegratingitwiththereceiver.

Thesedeviceshavelimitedbuilt-inESDprotection.TheleadsshouldbeshortedtogetherorthedeviceplacedinconductivefoamduringstorageorhandlingtopreventelectrostaticdamagetotheMOSgates.

Theintendedapplicationofthisdeviceandsignalingtechniqueisforpoint-to-pointbasebanddatatransmissionovercontrolledimpedancemediaofapproximately100Ω.Thetransmissionmediamaybeprinted-circuitboardtraces,backplanes,orcables.Thelargenumberofreceiversintegratedintothesamesubstratealongwiththelowpulseskewofbalancedsignaling,allowsextremelyprecisetimingalignmentofclockanddataforsynchronousparalleldatatransfers.Whenusedwithitscompanion,8-or16-channeldriver,theSN65LVDS3orSN65LVDS387,over300milliondatatransferspersecondinsingle-edgeclockedsystemsarepossiblewithlittlepower.(Note:Theultimaterateanddistanceofdatatransferdependsontheattenuationcharacteristicsofthemedia,thenoisecouplingtotheenvironment,andothersystemcharacteristics.)

Althoughitisnotnecessarytoseparateouttheanalog/digitalsuppliesandgroundsontheSN65LVDS/T388AandSN75LVDS/T388A,thepinoutprovidestheuserthatoption.Tohelpminimizeorperhapseliminateswitchingnoisebeingcoupledbetweenthetwosupplies,theusercouldlayoutseparatesupplyandgroundplanesforthedesignatedpinout.

Mostapplicationsprobablyhaveallgroundsconnectedtogetherandallpowersuppliesconnectedtogether.Thisconfigurationwasusedwhilecharacterizingandsettingthedata-sheetparameters.

FAILSAFE

Oneofthemostcommonproblemswithdifferentialsignalingapplicationsishowthesystemrespondswhennodifferentialvoltageispresentonthesignalpair.TheLVDSreceiverislikemostdifferentiallinereceivers,inthatitsoutputlogicstatecanbeindeterminatewhenthedifferentialinputvoltageisbetween–100mVand100mV,andwithinitsrecommendedinputcommon-modevoltagerange.TI'sLVDSreceiverisdifferentinhowithandlestheopen-inputcircuitsituation,however.

Open-circuitmeansthatthereislittleornoinputcurrenttothereceiverfromthedatalineitself.Thiscouldbewhenthedriverisinahigh-impedancestateorthecableisdisconnected.Whenthisoccurs,theLVDSreceiverpullseachlineofthesignalpairtonearVCCthrough300-kΩresistors,asshowninFigure13.Thefail-safefeatureusesanANDgatewithinputvoltagethresholdsatabout2.3Vtodetectthisconditionandforcetheoutputtoahigh-level,regardlessofthedifferentialinputvoltage.
