四、阅读判断

阅读下面短文,根据短文内容判断句子正误。正确的写“A”,错误的写 “B”。

The local people of La Gomera can carry on conversations by whistling(吹口哨) from far away. For face-to-face conversations, they speak Spanish. But when they need to speak over a distance(距离), they whistle.

La Gomera is a small island. This island is almost shaped like a circle. It is very mountainous. Walking from one place to another may be a slow and difficult job. That is why whistling is so useful to the local people. A message can easily be whistled over a couple of miles, while travelling that same distance on foot might take an hour.

A good whistler can be heard and understood five miles away. His whistling can be farther away when it is windless. It is said that the record is about nine miles. Anyone who has heard of a top whistler will agree that this record is quite possible.

A whistle travels farther than a shout, and is easier to understand. When a person shouts, he cannot pronounce his words well. But if a whistle is heard, it will be heard clearly.

Whistling is popular at La Gomera, and many methods of whistling are used… 31.People of La Gomera speak over a distance by shouting. 32.From Paragraph 2 we know La Gomera lies between two circles. 33.A windless day helps a whistle travel farther. 34.Nobody believes the whistling record is nine miles.

35.The writer is very likely to talk about different methods of whistling in the last paragraph.

From Star Wars to Interstellar, I have always loved science fiction. My favorite class in university was astronomy (天文学). I was introduced to Chinese sci-fi through The Three-Body Problem after I moved to China in 2015. An old bookworm friend of mine told me about Liu Cixin’s famous trilogy (三部曲).

The Three Body Problem begins with the “cultural revolution” (1966-76) in the background. The key event of the story is when an alien civilization (文明) receives a signal (信号) from Earth. The Trisolarans (“三体人”) make immediate plans to invade (侵略) our planet. However, humans have 450 years to prepare. In that time, they form different groups.

试卷第5页,共12页 B.in the eyes

C.on broken skin

Some want to embrace the invading aliens while others want to fight them. The book goes back and forth between past and present, covering many themes—politics, psychology (心理学), physics and environmentalism.

I enjoyed the realism of the story. I think Liu is right in that aliens would likely come to our planet for environmental reasons. He’s also correct about humans being divided. After all, I think humans are irrational (不理性的). Liu also uses real science. String Theory (弦理论) is the modern idea about how our universe works. It features heavily in this story.

China has a rich history of scientific knowledge and certainly is no stranger to sci-fi. Lunar Colony was one of the first Chinese sci-fi stories ever written. It was published in 1904. The Chinese writer, known by the pen name Huangjiang Diaosou, wrote the serial in the magazine Xiuxiang Xiaoshuo. As a foreign lover of sci-fi, I find this interesting because some countries have only more recently started writing sci-fi. In spite of cultural, historic and political differences between East and West, China has made a massive contribution (巨大的贡献) to sci-fi.

41.How does the writer first know the book The Three Body Problem? A.He learned about it from his favorite class in university. B.A friend introduced it to him. C.He read it in a Chinese bookstore.

42.Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.The writer agrees with Liu Cixin’s predictions about the future. B.String Theory is made up by Liu Cixin to show how the universe works. C.The Three Body Problem is not only about the science and the future. 43.What does the underlined word in the second paragraph “embrace” mean? A.To fight back with full strength. B.To accept somebody happily. C.To help someone achieve their dreams.

44.What can we know about the book The Three Body Problem from the passage? A.The story happens in the future world. B.Humans fight with the Trisolarans in the book.

C.It may be for environmental reasons that the Trisolarans choose to come to earth. 45.What does the writer think of Chinese sci-fi?

A.China has a rich history of scientific knowledge but is not good at writing fictions.

试卷第6页,共12页

B.Chinese sci-fi is more interesting than western ones.

C.Chinese sci-fi plays an important role in the world of science fictions.

十、阅读填表

根据短文内容,完成表格中所缺的信息。

Each year, the US Social Security Administration (美国社会保障局) releases a list of the most popular baby names of the year. Nearly every US citizen is registered (登记) with the organization, making it easy to create an accurate (精确的) list.

From the list, we can see the changes in society and culture over the years. For example, names such as Dorothy and Margaret (for girls) and Harold and Walter (for boys) were popular in the 1910s. These names usually have good meanings. Parents back then liked to use these kinds of names because they wished their children to be “beautiful”, “smart”, “brave” or “handsome”. But these days, these names are considered to be old-fashioned. Some even refer to them as “old people names”.

Pop culture can also influence how popular names become. For example, the name “Isabella” became more popular in 2009. This was because of the success of the Twilight film series, in which one of the main characters is named Isabella.

Most people think Charlie is a boy’s name. But the name is becoming more popular for girls in the United States. In 1910, just 5 percent of American babies named “Charlie” were girls. But over 100 years later, 51 percent of “Charlies” are female. And it’s not just boys’ names that are being given to girls. “Marion”, for example, is becoming more popular for boys. This trend (趋势) may reflect changes in gender equality (性别平等) in the US. Many names that were once thought to be “boy” or “girl” names are now unisex (男女通用的).

The list shows which names are most common during a certain decade—and which ones are more rare. For example, in the 1980s—when I was born—the most common name was Michael. It happens to be my name. But it seems that American parents these days are less likely to give children popular names like John or Mary. They tend to choose some unusual, even strange names for their children. Researchers believe this has something to do with the change of social culture. Being unique (独特的) is considered to be one of parents’

试卷第10页,共12页

expectations for their children. Names ___76___ changes of times The reasons behind baby names ___77___ Pop culture The name “Isabella” saw a high jump in ___78___ in 2009 because of the success of the Twilight film series. 1. In 1910s, names with good meanings like Dorothy and Walter were popular because they carry ___79___ for their children. 2. Boys and girls these days can have the same names, because people Social culture are paying more attention to gender equality. 3. Parents tend to choose some unusual names, ___80___ popular names like John or Mary for their children, because they want their children to be unique.
