One Sunday, the local newspaper showed a picture of the family who suffered the typhoon hardest and gave their clothing sizes. I thought this would be a good chance to teach my children to help people in need.
I showed the picture and told their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan. “These poor people are now in need of help,”I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”Then I put three large empty boxes on the floor.
The boys and I filled the first box with food. Then I encouraged them to donate some of their less favorite things. Meghan watched quietly beside us. “I’ll help you find something for the little girl when I finish this,”I said.
The boys placed the toys they had chosen into the second box while I filled the third box with clothes. Meghan walked up with Lucy, her favourite toy rabbit. She hugged Lucy and gave her a final kiss, then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, honey,”I said, “You don’t have to give Lucy to them. You love her so much.”Meghan nodded seriously and said, “Lucy makes me happy, mum. Maybe she’ll make that little girl happy, too.”
The boys watched, open-mouthed. Without a word, Brad rose and went to his room. He came back carrying his favorite comic book. He looked over at Meghan and placed it in the box next to Lucy. A smile spread across Brett’s face. Then he jumped up and ran to get some of hisprized Matchbox cars.
I pulled all of them into my arms. Then I took my old jacket out from the box of clothes and replaced(替换)it with my new green jacket. I hoped the young woman in the picture wouldlove it as much as I did.

Memory likes to play tricks on us, taking us to places we once loved, but haven’t seen in years.
It was early morning, raining and cold. Something woke me. Two little feet bouncing(蹦跳) down the stairs. It was my 7-year-old grandson Henry on his way to the kitchen to“cook breakfast”. I suddenly thought about cookies. The perfections my grandmother baked in her wood stove(火炉). They were light as air and sweet as a baby’s smile. We’d cover them in butter(黄油)and top them with jam that we made with blackberries that I picked myself. That’s what life was like when I visited my grandmother on her farm---picking berries, milking cows, churning(搅拌) butter, eating cookies, chasing(追) lightning bugs(萤火虫) ... What more could a child ever want? I loved it. I especially loved those cookies. I wish I knew how she made them.
People take it for granted(觉得……理所应当) that there’ll always be time and chance to teach and learn all that they want to share and know.
I learned a lot from my grandmother. How to read. How to sit in a swing at the end of a day and just be content(满足的). But I never learned how to make cookies her way. I've made them according to various recipes(食谱), with varying success. They’re not bad, but not half as good as hers were. My kids would wolf them down. They weren't crazy about the cookies, but they loved butter and jam.
I rolled out of bed and went downstairs to hug my grandchild and bake some cookies. They weren’t great cookies. But they were good enough. We covered them in butter and jam. Henry ate two and kept eyeing mine until I gave him half. Maybe someday he'll say they were the best cookies ever.
The memories we leave with our children and grandchildren and all of our loved ones-like the cookies we bake and the stories that will be told about us long after we are gone -are never made with perfection. They’re Just made with love. Love makes everything better, even without butter and jam. 31. What can we know about the authors relationship with her grandma?

D
In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, multiple studies have shown that this act has many benefits(益处).
New brain research, led by researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, confirms the same: choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learningand memory.
“When you write your shopping list or lecture notesby hand, you simplyremember the contentbetterafterwards,” said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study.
The study was conducted(实施) using equipment to track and record brain wave activity. The participants included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood(风帽) with over250 electrodes(电极). The sensors(传感器) in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build contact between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. “Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it's important for children to go through the tiring phase of learning to write byhand,” she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. “If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor(精细动作) skills and senses. It’s important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible,”Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an article, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture. 34. What do we know about the study?
A. The study involved 45 participants altogether.
B. The participants were divided into two groups to conduct the study C. All the participants were gathered together for examination.
D. The sensors in the electrodes were used to track brain wave activity.
35. Why does the brain become more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard according to Van der Meer?
A. More senses are made active when writing by hand.
B. The brain is more used to the skills required to write by hand. C. Writing by hand is easier on the brain.
D. Noise made by typing doesn't distract the brain when writing by hand. 36. How does Van der Meer think handwriting benefits people?
A. It allows children to become more patient. B. It increases peoples interest in learning. C. It helps people develop fine motor skills. D. It allows people to write better essays. 37. What's the main purpose of the text?
A. To encourage the use of handwriting. B. To advise children to start to write early. C. To report on a new research on handwriting.
D. To explain how handwriting affects adults and children differently.
