雅思写作必看范文-Discuss Both Views

C6, P1

Successful sports professionals can earn a great deal of more money than people in other important professionals. Some people think this is fully justified while

others think it is unfair.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task. Write about the following topic. Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own

knowledge or experience. Write at least 250 words.

As a result of constant media attention, sports professionals in my country have become stars and celebrities, and those at the top are paid huge salaries. Just

like movie stars, they live extravagant lifestyles with huge houses and

cars.(39words)

Many people find their rewards unfair, especially when comparing these super salaries with those of top surgeons or research scientists, or even leading politicians who have the responsibility of governing the country. However, sports salaries are not determined by considering the contribution to society a person makes, or the level of responsibility he or she holds. Instead, they reflect the public popularity of sport in general and the level of public support that successful stars can generate. So the notion of ‘fairness’ is not the issue.(85words)

Those who feel that sports stars’ salaries are justified might argue that the number of professionals with real talent is very few, and the money is a recognition of the skills and dedication a person needs to be successful. Competition is constant and a player is tested every time they perform in their relatively short career. The pressure from the media is intense and there is little privacy out of the spotlight. So all of these factors may justify the huge earnings. (82words)

Personally, I think that the amount of money such sports stars make is more justified

than the huge earnings of movie stars, but at the same time, it indicates that our society places more value on sport than on more essential professions and

achievements.(44words) Total word count: 260words

Some advertisers have increased the amount of money they spend trying to persuade children to buy snacks, toys and other goods. Advertisers claim there is useful information in these advertisements, Parents object to such pressure on their

children.

Discuss both points of view and give your own opinion.

There is great concern about the effects of advertisements on adults, but even greater concern about their effects on children. In my opinion, ads clearly aiming to sell products to children should be limited. In this essay, I will give my reasons

for thinking this. (45words)

One reason that parents objects to advertising pressure on children is that children are more likely than adults to be influenced by non-factual aspects of advertising, such as bright colours and famous stars appearing in ads. This can lead to children wasting money (either their own or their parents’) on things that they don’t really need. The way in which advertisers continually focus more on non-factual aspects of advertisements also suggests that advertisements are not so concerned with

informing people as they claim. (83words)

Another problem as far as parents are concerned, is that advertisers spend much more money on advertising products that can be unhealthy for children, such as fast food and snack foods. Advertisers claim that they only encourage children to consume such products in moderation, but such messages, if indeed here any, only appear

as minor suggestions in very small print. (60words)

A third problem for parents is that children often pressure their parents to buy them things, often simply because their friends have them. This can be particularly distressing for parents; since kids often try to associate the number of things

their parents buy them with how much their parents love them, which is simply untrue and unfair. Parents who are on low incomes will obviously find the pressure even

greater. (70words)

Advertisers may claim that there is useful information in their ads, but this very hard to discern. Many advertisements show stars playing sports or people enjoying themselves. It is hard to justify the suggestion that drinking a certain drink will turn you into a sports star or that eating a bar of chocolate will suddenly turn

you into a fun person.(61words)

To conclude, I think that parents are right to be concerned about how advertisements

affect their children. (17) ( 336)

Some people believe that the aim of university education is to help graduates find better jobs while some others hold that there are wider benefits for the individual

and society. Discuss both viewpoints and give your own opinion.

In this knowledge-based society, academic qualifications are regarded as one of the top priorities for people seeking to pursue a better life. A considerable proportion of students attend college or university for the simple reason that a degree from an institution of higher learning may be to their advantage in

job-hunting.

Some people believe that the aim of university education is to prepare students for their future careers. They argue that many students spend a great amount of money and time attending college simply because they want to enhance their competitiveness on the job market after graduation. If higher education fails to meet this fundamental requirement that students expect, then university education will be viewed as both a money waster and time waster. This would be especially true in times of economic downturn when job opportunities shrink dramatically and the competition for jobs gets more intense. Therefore, higher

education geared to employment should be encouraged.

Others, however, think otherwise, holding that university education is not, and should not be, restricted to this single goal. They argue that job-oriented education may not prove effective in helping the employees to excel in their careers. This is because the knowledge gained and skills mastered at school are bound to be obsolete given the fact that the world is constantly changing in terms of science and technology. To be truly exceptional and outstanding, one needs to possess a strong ability to think critically and generate really original and insightful ideas. Of crucial importance, therefore, is to educate students to be creative, flexible, and adaptive problem-solvers, capable of innovation. In addition, institutions of higher learning should assume the responsibility of shaping students’ values, such as their outlook on the world, judgments about right and wrong, and obligation to make contributions to social betterment. Obviously, this is not only conducive to the individuals involved but also to the welfare of society

as a whole.

By way of conclusion, I would argue that university education should be encouraged to fulfill various functions in addition to preparing students for their future careers. Universities and colleges are expected to foster, among other things, students’ critical and creative thinking as well as moral integrity so that graduates are more likely to achieve personal success and contribute to social

betterment. (378)
