英语四级10篇范文

1. How Should Parents Help Children to Improve Practical Abilities? Having some practical knowledge is essential to a fulfilled and successful life. However, in today’s society most children are not being taught any practical knowledge. For example, they can program a computer, but they cannot cook, wash clothes or fix a leak. Therefore, they always feel frustrated when a problem arises.

To improve the practical ability of the next generation, parents must first be aware that a person who needs others to do the most basic things for him is essentially helpless. Understanding this clearly, they will be motivated to help their children learn the basic skills and knowledge of practical life. They can enroll their children in special classes, or just allow them to watch and practice with someone who has practical knowledge.

A person who can take care of many things himself will be more self-confident.

2. College Students Need to be Taught how to Deal with Frustration

1

Frustration is part of life. Things break just when we need to use them. Traffic is bad just when we need to get somewhere quickly. These types of things happen all over the world to everyone.

Sadly, many of today’s young people have been sheltered from life’s frustrations by over-protective parents, who always solve all problems for them and give them everything they want. As a result, these young people become completely ignorant about dealing with frustration. They have no idea what to do when in trouble, or feel unable to cope with life when a problem arises.

Since parents are failing so badly to help their children in this area, universities must undertake the responsibility to give young people instructions about how to tackle frustrations in life. Then, when students graduate from college, they will possess the capability and confidence in facing frustration in their future life.

3. College Students Taking Double-degree Programs Nowadays, it is quite common for college students to take double-degree programs. If they can take all the classes and pass all the exams for two majors, they will receive two degrees upon graduation.

This phenomenon has arisen due to students’ intention of using their

2

time in college as efficiently as possible to prepare for their future careers, or at least become more competitive.

From my point of view, the decision to pursue a double degree should be made only after weighing all the pros and cons. A double degree may be very useful, but students will most likely acquire such degrees at the expense of all the extra-curricular activities. They may end up as qualified students, but they may not enjoy comprehensive development at the same time.

4. Students Rating Their Teachers

In colleges and universities, it is quite common for students to rate or evaluate their teachers. There are various opinions about this practice. Advocates of the idea feel that such an evaluation helps both the teachers and administrators see the effect and influence of teachers on their students. Without such evaluation, they say, teachers would become lazy, and students would have no voice to express their dissatisfaction.

On the other side of the issue are those who point out that students are learners, not judges. Very often these evaluations turn in popularity contests, with personal, funny or humorous teachers coming out better than other intelligent and skilled, but less funny teachers.

3

In my opinion, students should have an opportunity to rate their teachers once or twice a semester, but this should not be the only way a college or university evaluates its teachers. A college or university should have a teacher evaluation committee visiting classes, analyzing all aspects of teachers and their classes, surveying students and reporting on their findings. In this way I believe the colleges or universities will remain places of learning rather than places of popularity competitions.

5. On Low Carbon Living

Low carbon living is living in such a way as to make the least contribution of carbon emissions to the environment. For example, some people do not own private cars and even avoiding taking taxies if possible. They choose trains rather than planes for long-distance rips, and take buses, ride bikes or even walk to places nearby.

Why is there such an interest in low carbon living? In recent years, environmentalists have begun to suspect that carbon emissions from human society are a major contributing factor to the current global warming phenomenon. The rapid increase in carbon emissions over the past few decades has been alarming. Apart from the global warming issue, living a low carbon life can also be good for the health of the local

4

environment.

To live a low carbon life myself, I take public transportation whenever and wherever possible. It takes longer to travel, but I have found that I can do an amazing number of things while on the bus of subway, from listening to English on my MP3 player to reading my favorite books. I hope more and more people will live a low carbon life for the sake of our world.

6. Online Shopping

Shopping on line has greatly increased in recent years. Today, almost everything is available online: books and music, clothes and shoes, computers and other electronic devices, all kinds of electrical appliances, commodities, even fresh vegetables and other food which can be delivered directly to your door.

There are several reasons for this trend. First, it’s convenient—you can shop whenever you like. Simplicity is another factor—it’s very easy to research products, read customer reviews and compare prices to find the best deal. There are no crowds, just the fun of shopping.

Personally, I love online shopping. However, I always check three things before making an online purchase. First, does the online shop have

5

a reputation of being trustworthy and providing good service? Search for positive and negative reviews of the shop from other customers. Second, is the site secure? Choose the websites which have privacy protection to protect our personal information. Finally, what is the online shop’s return policy? Before you buy anything, find out how you can return it if the product turns out to different from what you were expecting.

7. Should Colleges Students Own Credit Cards?

In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of credit card use among college students. It is easy for college students to get credit cards in that many banks encourage students to activate cards by providing gifts, counting on the fact that, in the future, more well-educated customers earn more, spend more and are more likely to pay credit card interest.

This phenomenon has both advantages and disadvantage. On the positive side, getting a student credit card is a good deal. Credit card companies have very few requirements regarding income level, since they expect that the students will have higher incomes in the future. However, on the negative side, many students are rather immature in handling money, and having a credit card tens to tempt them into spending more than they have.

6

In my opinion, having credit card is very useful. It is wise for a university student to get one since being accepted for a credit card is more difficult after graduation since new graduates’ starting incomes are usually quite low. I think that students should wait until their senior year to get credit cards and establish a habit of paying off the entire bill every month.

8. University Clubs

As university students, there is a great variety of clubs available to us: common ones, such as sports and language clubs, and more unique ones, such as poetry clubs or drama clubs. How in the world do we choose from such a variety?

There are several things to consider when choosing a club. First, what are our interests? What do we like to do? Second, we should consider our time. Which clubs require a great time commitment? We might also ask ourselves which clubs would be beneficial to our future careers or personal development. Finally, we should also look at the kind of people who tend to be in each kind of club. Do we want to be influenced by these people?

Joining at least one club is quite important for us students. We need to

7

get some experience in things we are interested in besides our majors. In addition, clubs can help us to develop social, organizational and other skills. And, of course, clubs are the perfect way to give our mind a break from our studies.

9. The Certificate Craze on Campus

A certificate craze has recently gripped university students. It seems that everywhere there are classes, conferences, workshops and other opportunities offering a piece of paper upon completion to certify that the paper-holder is qualified to do something. And there seems to be certificates for everything: language proficiency, computer proficiency, accounting, software design, counseling and a host of others.

The reasons for this craze are quite simple. Nearly all the students are afraid of how competitive the job market has become and want to boost their chances of landing a good job once they graduate.

In my opinion, attending such classes or preparing for the tests may be of some benefit if the students can actually learn something useful. However, I think that the certificates will not be so useful for students to find a good job. It seems to me that most companies know that these certificates are a dime of a dozen and that they do not fully indicate the

8

actual ability or expertise of the person holding the certificate. Interviewers look for experiences, so we students should spend more time gaining practical experience, such as part-time jobs or internships. We should draw our attention from acquiring certificates to actually learning something indeed. That means we should focus on the learning itself rather than on the certificates.

10. My Thoughts on the University Arts Festival

For our university’s arts festival, I think that the university should hold open competitions and auditions for anyone who wants to take part in the festival’s exhibitions and performances. This would not only increase general interest in and appreciation for the arts, but would also be a good way for our university to show its support for the arts. This arts festival is an excellent opportunity to remind everyone that arts are important for everyone to appreciate and take part in, regardless of major.

I think that there should be general, open auditions and competitions in all the major arts. There should be categories for painting and sculpture, folk and modern dance, and instrumental and choral groups, both large and small. The judges should be joint committees made up of both faculty and students, both experts in the field and novices. Arranging the festival

9

in this way, I believe, will give our students a greater enjoyment of the arts, a break from studies and a fuller appreciation for what it means to human.
