Traveling Abroad. You should write at least 150 words based on the chart and outline give below:

Number of people in City X traveling abroad in 1995, 2000 and 2005

Traveling Abroad

In recent years, more and more citizens here would like to travel abroad. In 1995, the number of people who would like to travel abroad was 10000, which increased to nearly 40000 in 2000. And in 2005, the number further climbed above 12,000. There are several reasons for the shocking rise.

The improvement of the economic conditions is probably the main reason for it. People do not need to worry about their diet and various other necessities. After visiting famous scenic spots throughout our country, the citizens’ taste has changed, with support of enough finance.

Moreover, enhancement of personal capacity is becoming more and more a requirement for those who want to make greater success. With the development of economy and technology, citizens begin to take advantage of different foreign

products as well as education. Since most citizens have got used to their life at home, traveling abroad becomes one of the easiest ways to have direct contact with exotic cultures.

Many advantages as traveling abroad may bring to us, it may also bring about many disadvantages. For instance, there are many elites who have ever traveled abroad may be attracted by the nicer living and researching conditions abroad and thus never return, which is really a pity to our nation.

Comparatively speaking, traveling abroad is a serious decision to make. Maybe, look before you leap is better.

The Importance of Reading Classics. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below. 1.

The Importance of Reading Classics

As many people say, reading classics plays a significant role to one‘s growing. Because all of the classics are the positive results of wisdom.

We can learn much knowledge and become more intelligent by reading them. Especially, when we are during our growing time, it helps us get many right minds to reading more famous books.

However, now people who enjoy reading those classical books are getting less and less. There are a lot of reasons for this phenomenon. To begin with, there are many other leisure activities in the modern society, young men go to do these things instead of reading. What‘s more, many people prefer some other books to classics because they think classics are useless.

I think, we university men should take some effective actions to prevent the situation. We should read classics as many as possible in our spare time, and we shouldn‘t just scan those words and phrases over our minds but to use your head to think more about those. 范文2

The Importance of Reading Classics

As we all know, books, especially the classical, present the precious accumulation of wisdom and knowledge beyond the limitation of time or space, from which we can enjoy numerous anecdotes, get to know exotic culture and tradition, experience the legendary and miraculous life of our idols and make ourselves better men day by day.

2

Nevertheless, people, especially the young, seem to have stored those classical books merely on the shelf for an unbelievably long time, which can be attributed to various factors. On the one hand, modern people have to cope with the quick pace and unavoidable stress of their work or life; therefore, they can hardly devote time to reading books. On the other hand, people tend to be more material-oriented involving their social status, amount of wealth or prospects of getting promotion, which eclipse the important benefits from reading classical books.

To me, it is essential for most undergraduates to read certain classical books, especially ones filled with life-long motivation and sagacious thoughts, which may not guarantee them short-term returns but will bring them far-reaching reward.

The Celebration of Western Festivals. You should write at least 150 words following outline given below. 1.

The Celebration of Western Festivals

Nowadays, an increasing number of Chinese people are fond of celebrating some Western festivals. For example, they send chocolate and flowers to their beloved at Christmas. In addition, they cheat others as some westerners do on April Fool’s Day. There are many different factors deciding this phenomenon.

Among all these factors, language learning plays a critical role. More and younger age groups are exposed to western culture and festivals through learning English. Moreover, some western festivals provide relaxing and comfortable atmosphere, which attracts a large number of Chinese people. Besides, many businessmen view foreign festivals as golden opportunities to make money, so they may desperately try to boost the atmosphere of foreign festivals.

In my opinion, Chinese people celebrating western festivals has both advantages and disadvantages. For one thing, by celebrating western festivals, people have more opportunities to show their affection to others and to meet together. For another, our own home-grown festivals’ crucial roles may be weakened to some extent. Therefore, we must keep a balance between the western festivals and our traditional festivals.!

Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed? You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below. 1. 有人做好事期望得到回报;

Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed?

Lei Feng, a communist soldier, who \"devoted his limited life to the limitless cause of serving the people\has long been set as an outstanding example to encourage us to spare no efforts to help those in need, whereas, with the passage of time, people voice different opinions towards doing good deeds.

Some insists \"A good turn deserves another\as the old saying goes, which indicates that a good deed ought to bring about a reward, the motivation or the stimulus for the favor. Meanwhile, others believe good deeds belong to voluntary work, purely out of willingness, which has nothing to do with expectation for rewards. As to me, good deeds are supposed to result from spontaneous reaction confronted with certain circumstances, ranging from giving up one seat to a silver-haired passenger aboard the bus, donating blood to the designated organization by Red Cross to traveling to the remote and poverty-stricken areas to serve as a volunteer for a whole year.

In short, rewards are by no means the trigger or purpose for intention of conducting good deeds, no matter how trivial or stunning they are.

Part Ⅰ Writing

范文:

Will E-books Replace Traditional Books?

Recent decades have seen the rapid development of information technology. As a result, many electric inventions, including E-books, have found their way into our everyday life and have gained increasing popularity among common people.

It’s no wonder that some people hold the idea that E-books will replace traditional books sooner or later because E-books have various advantages over the traditional ones. To start with, all the E-books can be downloaded from the internet directly, most of which are free of charge, while the traditional books in bookstores are much more expensive. What’s more, E-books can be stored more easily in our computers and are more convenient for people to carry around. Last but not the least, reading E-books has become a fashion in our life, which is particularly appealing to our young people.

5

As far as I am concerned, nowadays traditional books are still the leading means of reading. However, with the further development of information technology and with the popularity of computer and internet, E-books will surely take the place of traditional books in the near future.

Part I Writing (30 minutes)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay entitled On the Importance of a Name. you shuold write at least 150 words following the outline given below.

On the Importance of a Name

Is a name important? To some people, yes. They strongly believe that a name is

responsible for a person’s life. Therefore, they take all the trouble, trying various ways to search wonderful names for themselves or their children, expecting the names would work magic for a glorious future.

To others, however, the answer is \"NO\". According to them, the name is a nothing but a lifeless code. Being lifeless, a code is powerless, not to mention it is so called 'magic' of bringing a person success. To achieve success, they say, opportunity may count, and one's own efforts definitely count, but a name that simply function as the way of distinguishing one from another, obviously don't.

6

As far as I am concerned, a name is important in a sense. After all, the first thing that people learn about a person is usually his name, and a name that sounds beautiful may give and leave people a great first impression. However, it is not that important or powerful as to promise a person his bright future. For a bright future, we need intelligence, honesty, sincerity and efforts more than just a beautiful name.

Should parents send their kids to art class?

1 Should parents send their kids to art classes?

With the development of our society and economy, parents become more concerned about the future competition of children , so more and more parents manage kinds of ways to enhance the ability of children in every aspects , like they sent their children to art class after school or at weekends in order to promise their kids a more competitive future.

The majority parents have the above view on this issue, believing it is a good way to cultivate the children’s interests and hobbies, paving their future path in life .while there are also some people who think that this will give kids heavy burden, not really good for their growth.

In my opinion, we should respect our kids and do something to child's own interests and hobbies rather than blindness. Second, do not give too much pressure on kids, giving them a healthy environment for growth is much more than attending art classes.

范文2 Should parents send their kids to art classes?

A child’s world is supposed to be fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Unfortunately, this is not the case for some kids, especially for those born and bred in cities --- their joys are dimmed and even lost because a majority of them are forced to attend various art classes.

Some claim that it is beneficial for children’s development. They might have their reasons because most parents are convinced that their kids are gifted gifts from the god. They presume that the earlier their children are exposed to arts, the more likely it is to find out the artistic potential hidden in them. Even if their children fail to become another child prodigy like Lang Lang or Li Yundi, the interests in arts, say, in music, cultivated in childhood will be of great value in their whole life.

In spite of the possible benefits mentioned, I, like others, am strongly against it. The major harm is that it might deprive children of their pleasure to play after school. Faced with competition and contest for better universities, most children are buried in piles of homework. Forcing them to art classes will leave them less time to enjoy the

7

beauty of the nature or to find their talent in things they are really interested in.

To sum up, childhood is a time for children to play as they wish. Rather than cramming knowledge, it is more important to pave the way for their desire to know than to put them on a diet of facts they are not ready to assimilate.

范文3: Should parents send their kids to art classes?

Children are the future of the nation, the pearl in their parents’ eyes. Hoping that their kids can become the cream of the crop among others, more and more parents send their kids to various art classes to let them learn more. However, people hold different opinions toward this phenomenon.

Some people hold a firm position that it is a beneficial thing for kids to attend art classes. There, kids can not only learn some art skills that may helpful for them someday, they can also get a chance to expand their interests to a great extent, and their minds can also be broadened. Besides, kids can also make a lot of friends there, thus their communication skills may also be sharpened. While for the others, they hold an opposite opinion. They think parents should not send their kids to art classes blindly against kids’ will, because this will get a definitely negative impact on kids. Kids, in these parents’ eyes, should be given more flexible time to relax and do whatever they are interested in. And kids also need freedom because unacceptable art classes will absolutely eliminate the nature of kids. Thus, sending kids to these classes will undoubtedly hurt them.

Every coin has two sides. As far as I am concerned, I think children’s interests should be taken into careful consideration before being sent to art classes. Children should be given enough freedom to develop by themselves. Whether parents should send their kids to art classes, it depends.

Recently there has been much discussion as to the desirability of parents sending their kids to various art classes. Generally, there are two camps of views on this phenomenon.

Some parents believe that childhood is the golden time for developing artistic talents in their children. A friend of mine told me that he wants his son to become a pianist like Langlang. “But if my son does not start from an early age, it’s only an unachievable dream,” he exclaimed. So he sends his five-year-old kid to piano classes every Saturday, rain or shine. Others, however voiced a different opinion. Their main argument is that attending art classes will impair the health of these children, who have toiled for five days at school. To materialize their parents’ dream, many kids have to burn the candle at both ends.

Personally, I am not in favor of sending all kids to art classes. As a proverb goes, “Love is the best teacher.” Parents should first of all find out whether their kids love the art or not. You can lead a horse to a river, but can you make him drink?

8

least 120 words following the outline given below:

Due Attention Should Be Given to the Study of Chinese

With China’s opening up, intercultural communication has become more and more frequent between Chinese and foreigners. A good command of at least one foreign language has increasingly been an essential skill for us. People, especially the youths, pay much more attention to foreign language acquisition than Chinese study.

Various factors can account for this situation. First of all, a good command of a foreign language may help young people to get a good job while Chinese skills may be of no significance in one’s job hunting and even their career. Consequently, some students may not treasure Chinese language any longer. Apart from that, nowadays fewer and fewer universities stimulate Chinese language study in campus, which has caused it to be marginalized. Under this circumstance, Chinese language becomes less and less popular in universities. It is clear that professors in the field of Chinese study are not so respected than they were before.

In view of this situation, effective measures should be taken to change it. First, the whole society should emphasize the importance of Chinese language in order to make it clear that it is one indispensable part of Chinese culture and Chinese race. Second, schools should promote Chinese language study and research. In addition, we individuals should contribute our own efforts to the study and protection of Chinese language.

To conclude, we should pay great attention to Chinese language, since the importance of it is never too great to be exaggerated.

My view on University Ranking

Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that university ranking has gained increasing popularity --- institutions home and abroad are always interested in it; newspapers and magazines are fond of carrying the news. Unfortunately, it has also given rise to some problems never thought of. Confronted with the dilemma, should we carry on the practice? When it comes to this question, people’s views vary from

9

one to another.

People who support ranking have their reasons. They are convinced that it can stimulate people, teachers and students alike, to work harder so that they can climb on the ladder or at least maintain their position. In this way, universities can produce more talents and knowledge demanded by our society. Also, supporters of university ranking maintain that it can act as a guide for employers when they decide where to find right employees..

But others may not agree. These people would argue that university ranking might force universities to care more about their position in the ranking but not about research that they are expected to do. For instance, it is often reported that some professors spend more time in bribing than in labs in order to have an edge in the fierce competition. Another good case in point is that some scholars even sacrifice their integrity to plagiarize under the pressure of “publish or perish”.

Who is right? Of course both sides have their reasons. As far as I am concerned, we might as well stop the practice for the good of universities and society. Universities are a place for free academic study. Only when scholars are free to in their pursuits, can they make contribution to society.
